About

Focus and Scope

Syntactic Theory and Research (STAR) publishes a wide range of articles on the syntax of natural languages and closely related fields. The journal promotes work on formal syntactic theory and theoretically-oriented descriptive work on particular languages and comparative grammar.

STAR also publishes research on the interfaces between syntax and related fields such as semantics, morphology, and phonology, as well as theoretical and experimental studies in sentence processing, language acquisition, and other areas of psycholinguistics that bear on syntactic theories.

In addition to full length research articles, STAR features short articles which undergo a comparatively fast peer review process.

Journal History

In 2024, Syntactic Theory & Research (STAR) emerged as a new journal building upon the best traditions of Syntax: A Journal of Theoretical, Experimental, and Interdisciplinary Research. The two former co-editors of Syntax along with many former members of the editorial board currently serve in the same capacity at Syntactic Theory and Research.

Sponsoring Organizations

STAR is supported by The Van Riemsdijk Foundation (VRF); Generative Linguistics in the Old World (GLOW); Linguistics Association of Great Britain (LAGB). We are grateful that all three foundations/associations support the editorial office of STAR.

Publication Frequency

The journal is published online as a continuous volume and issue throughout the year. Articles are made available as soon as they are ready to ensure that there are no unnecessary delays in making content publicly available.

Special Collections of articles are welcomed and will be published as part of the normal issue, but also within a separate collection page.

Publication Fees

There are no publication fees. This journal is published by the Open Library of Humanities (OLH). Unlike many open-access publishers, the OLH does not charge any author fees. This does not mean that we do not have costs. Instead, our costs are paid by an international library consortium.

Voluntary Author Contributions

Authors who have access to institutional funds or grant funding earmarked for Open Access publication (via a research grant or through their institution's department or library)—and only those authors—are kindly asked to use those funds to cover the publication costs for their article in STAR through a Voluntary Author Contribution (VAC). The VAC is genuinely voluntary. Whether or not the author is able to contribute makes absolutely no difference to editorial decision-making on the submission. For further information please see the publisher's policy on VACs.

Archiving and Indexing

STAR is archived and indexed according to the publisher's policy.
